Bawany Chinapan

Ms Bawany Chinapan is the founder of Ask A Therapist Malaysia. She is a distinguished counselling practitioner, certified multigenerational family therapist and a sought after speaker on family issues and mental health. She is a registered licensed counsellor and a certified supervisor accredited by Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (LKM). In this capacity, she has contributed to elevating the standard of professional counselling in this region by supervising both trainees and licensed counsellors.

In 2019, in recognition of her contribution and expertise, Ms Bawany Chinapan was appointed by the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development as a Member of the Counselling Advisory Council, Malaysia, a position she holds with distinction to-date. She also serves as the Vice-President of the Malaysian Marriage and Family Therapy Association (MyMFT) and the past Vice- President of Trauma Association Malaysia.

Ms Bawany Chinapan’s specialization is on individual, couples and family counseling using multigenerational approach. She received training and supervision under the esteemed Master Family Therapist, Professor Maurizio Andolfi, where she attained the Certification in Multigenerational Family Therapy from Accademia di Psicoterapia della Familigia, Rome,Italy.

Ms Bawany Chinapan has also acquired qualifications in different modalities of counseling, and psychotherapy. This includes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) for trauma-based intervention and Choice Theory Reality Therapy (CTRT), where she is also a faculty trainer.

In addition to practice, her academic credentials include being the Program Chair for the Masters in Counseling program at HELP University where she served as Senior Lecturer from 2009 until 2023.

As an academic, her specialization is on development and enrichment of the marital and family counseling modules of the course, where she facilitates as a lecturer, instructor and supervisor. As a researcher, her focus is on women and children at risk; and family wellbeing.

As a sought after trainer and speaker, Ms Bawany Chinapan has delivered to a global audience via conferences, forums and webinars in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, and Italy. She is also invited by various professional bodies such as the Bar Council and NGOs such as the Women’s Aid Organization (WAO) and Consortium of Institutes of Families in Asian Region (CIFA) to share her expertise and experience on individual and family well-being; and mental health.

Ms Bawany Chinapan holds a Masters in Counseling and Psychotherapy (Edith Cowan); LLB Hons (London); Bachelor of Soc. Sciences (UKM) and Diploma in Education (Malaya).
